Born in England 1972, Paul lived on Castle Vale estate, Birmingham. He describes his background as working class and is extremely proud of his working class roots and family history linked to boxing. As a young boy he remembers vividly going with his Father to many amateur boxing events at the Irish Centre Digbeth Birmingham, Jaguar Club in Castle Bromwich and the ‘’Forget me not’’ club Tyburn Road Erdington.
Paul describes his early years as a fundamental influence to his deep love of boxing that lead him in later years to travel all across the UK to many boxing events and to the ''mecca'' of Boxing, Madison Square Garden’s New York. This was a profound experience for Paul, being sat at ringside watching a World Championship title fight between Zab Judah v Carlos Baldomir on 7th January 2006. Paul recollects the atmosphere, meeting renowned Boxing Promoter Don King at ringside, hearing the sounds and impact of the punches thrown by competing boxers. The atmosphere of the arena and cheering crowds, the corner men, cut men, boxing press at ring side, all added to the overall experience and feeling of excitement that Paul today strives to capture in his paintings.
Paul’s artistic flair began at an early age when at his secondary school, his art teacher described his art as ‘’realist’’ in style. This led Paul to study at Sutton College of Art and Design, for a Diploma in Art and Graphic Design and then to study at University of Central England for a degree in Engineering Product Design and a Master of Arts MA.
Paul admires the work of renowned American painters Edward Hopper, masterpiece Nighthawk (1942) Art works of LeRoy Neiman painting of Sugar Ray Robinson (1969) and George Bellows Artwork Dempsey and Firpo (1923-1924). Over 30 years Paul has formed an deep appreciation for many art styles, and has developed a distinctive artistic style of his own, using his chosen medium Gouache paint.
Paul now produces sought after boxing paintings on canvas that captures the boxer’s movement, raw intensity and atmosphere to the fight. Paul now draws his artistic influences and inspiration from the work of American Artist George Bellows. Bellow’s noted for his paintings of historical boxing scenes are of great influence to Paul. Paul strives in every one of his paintings to bring attention to detail, realism and an accurate depiction with his subtle brushstrokes and lightly applied paint, he captures the intensity and energy of both boxers and the atmospheric representation of the boxing arena and crowds surrounding the ring.
